Like most, Gary Freeze enjoyed "The Andy Griffith Show" in the same familiar progression as other Southerners: He laughed at its silly antics in his childhood, and reminisced like old friends when he revisited the characters in reruns as an adult.
But for Freeze, a Statesville native and professor of North Carolina history at Âé¶¹APPin Salisbury, his views on the show don't stop there.
Freeze has watched every episode more than once, more than twice and most likely more than three times. It was during that third time, though, when he discovered that underneath its first layer of simplicity lies a Mayberry most people don't realize exists.
