Here's a quick preview of what can and can't be recycled at Catawba! Continue reading below for details:

What CAN be recycled at Catawba

  • Aluminum cans, cups, and bottles (rinsed out)
  • Plastic bottles, jars, and jugs (rinsed out)
  • Miscellaneous papers: junk mail, newspaper, flattened cereal boxes, mixed paper, copy paper, magazines.
  • Cardboard (flattened)
  • Glass bottles and jars

What CAN'T be recycled at Catawba       

  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic wrap
  • Plastic cups
  • Plastic straws
  • Plastic utensils
  • Plastic fruit containers (plastic clamshells)
  • Styrofoam of any kind
  • Broken glass
  • Food and food contaminated items 
  • Used paper towels
  • Pizza boxes (these are compostable - not recyclable)
  • Snack/candy wrappers
  • Carbon paper
  • Rubber bands
  • Tape
  • Remember - When in doubt, throw it out (in the landfill bins)!

Electronics Recycling
Recycling Batteries; Tape the ends off and drop them off

  • Specific areas around campus are designated for battery recycling - !
  • If you have old electronics, please bring them to the IT Department located on the bottom floor of Hoke Hall.  from our partners at Powerhouse Recycling.

Hard to Recycle Items:

  • Be on the lookout for more news about how to recycle special items that are not accepted in our general recycling stream. If you have items you aren't sure what to do with, please contact Sustainability Program Director, Hannah Addair, with any questions.
